Pennsylvania's shoreline is 45 miles long. Lake Erie is the shallowest of all the Great Lakes with an average of 62 feet which makes it very dangerous. This is the third lighthouse built on the bluff. In 1902 the lens was sent to and is still at Ohio's Marblehead lighthouse. The replica lantern room was blown off the tower during a windstorm on May 5, 2003. On March 19, 2004 a 6,300 pound copper replica of the original lantern room was put on the lighthouse. The lighthouse is an attraction in Land Lighthouse Park. Tours are available from Erie Playhouse. The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
We've seen the Erie Land lighthouse mostly from the land. In the summer of 2010 we took the 90 minute Presque Isle Boat Tours cruise aboard the 65 foot Lady Kate and saw this light from the water. We hoped the boat would have gotten closer than it did. During the narrated cruise we traveled 14 miles on the water and also photographed Presque Isle and Erie North Pierhead.
